Will Botox Remove Frown Lines?
Botox is only part of the solution.
Botox is used to reduce the appearance of dynamic or motion-induced wrinkling. With time, skin overlying areas of facial motion like the forehead, glabella, crow’s foot, and mouth areas shows fixed wrinkles.
This is due to multiple factors including collagen loss and sun damage.
In my practice botox is used in combination with resurfacing procedures such as chemical peels and laser to address both the mobile and fixed components of skin lines.
Additionally if volume loss is making the wrinkles worse, injectible filler can be used to counteract this.
Here in Denver, we have a young population, but with our sun exposure and low humidity, we see skin aging earlier than other parts of the country. (Manish H. Shah, MD, FACS, Denver Plastic Surgeon)
if you re starting to see lines at rest without any muscle movement you need to take care of this before they do get “etched” into your skin. Botox for frown lines is one of the most effective and grtifying treatments patients can have. (Michael L. Schwartz, MD, West Palm Beach Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox is the best choice for frown lines or what we call the glabella area. Whether you have thin or thick skin will not affect the outcome. Finally regarding the question of the lines being present at rest is a common one.
This is what we refer to as static lines (when the muscle is relaxed). If the lines persist after Botox has taken effect one can inject a filler to smooth out these static lines. (Ted Brezel, MD, Long Island Dermatologic Surgeon)
Treatment of the glabellar region is the most common indication for Botox injections. When frown lines are present, even at rest, it’s important to begin treatment before they get deeper. Having thin skin will not adversely affect your results.
Two muscles are targeted through five injection points in the glabellar area – the procerus and the corrugator supercilii. Treatment of both the glabellar region as well as the lateral part of the eyebrow, when properly done, will cause a slight elevation of the eyebrow.
Known as an eyebrow lift, this will create an aesthetically pleasing arch in the eyebrow which can also help to make any excess skin in the upper eyelid become less apparent. (Mitchell Schwartz, MD, South Burlington Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox was “discovered” as a rejuvenating treatment when it was first used to treat prominent glabellar frown lines, at the base of the nose, and that remains the most common indication for the treatment today. Whether your skin is thick or thin in this area, you should get a nice result from treatment with Botox.
Unfortunately, the effect is not permanent so you will have to return for additional treatments in the future. The reason Botox works is because the prominent lines you have are due to the underlying muscle activity of the facial expression muscles responsible for frowning.
By knocking out the function of these muscles of expression, the underlying skin begins to relax a few days later… (Michael H. Rosenberg, MD, Mount Kisco Plastic Surgeon)
Botox and Glabellar Lines (frown lines)
Botox relaxes the muscle that lies deep below the skin. Skin thickness does not affect the outcome of Botox treatment. If the frown lines are not very deep, it is likely that they will disappear or become significantly reduced in appearance.
It may take a few treatments to achieve this result. Botox treatment works great to prevent the lines from becoming deeper thus slowing down the aging process! (Lori Stetler, MD, Dallas Dermatologic Surgeon)
The nice thing about botox is it works regardless of what condition your skin is in. Because it works on your muscles, not your skin, it will stop them from making the movement that caused the wrinkles in the first place.
To avoid your skin getting any thinner, use a daily sunblock moisturizer which will also prevent “age spots”. The spf number should be at least 30 and be used whether you’re going outside that day or not for best results! (Victoria W. Serralta, MD, Arlington Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox and Glabella
Botox works just as well on any skin type, or depth. Everyone is uniquely different. The important part of your treatment is making sure you are injected correctly with enough of the product. Botox is a great tool for prevention of wrinkles. (Joseph Serota, MD, Aurora Plastic Surgeon)
Botox is helpful but a filler such as restylane/juved may help more for your glab creases.
Not doubt botox will help you but a filler will help alot more. Many patients need both so don’t be disappointed if botox doesn’t help enough by itself. (David Hansen, MD, Beverly Hills Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox for Glabellar Lines
Botox works best on dynamic muscles – those that cause wrinkles when they move. Over time, the static wrinkles, those that are there at rest, will also be helped by Botox. At first, you may need a combination of both Botox and dermal fillers to achieve the best results. (David Shafer, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Glabellar Lines “11” perfect for Botox
Botulinum toxin A (Dysport or Botox) is the perfect treatment for your glabellar furrows. Your skin forms a crease just like a piece of paper when it is folded. The more you fold either, the deeper the crease.
Unlike a piece of paper, if you stop the folding of your skin it will regenerate and smooth out over time. So go ahead and stop your folding with Dysport or Botox! (Von Graham, MD, New Orleans Facial Plastic Surgeon)
While Botox (or Dysport) is pretty good at treating glabellar creases (the “11”), it is most powerful when used to prevent the creases. Once you have a crease in your skin, there has been some amount of permanent damage.
The same can be said of UV light damage. All of the tools and tricks that we have, as plastic surgeons, to fix problems, we still can’t compete with the results of prevention.
In short, the best time to start using Botox is before you have the creases.
For most people I would recommend sometime in the late 20’s. (Louis W. Apostolakis, MD, Austin Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Most likely, the fine lines will resolve and smooth out nicely within a couple of weeks after your treatment. In some cases, those that have deeper lines may benefit from cosmetic dermal filler (ex. Juvederm, Restylane) to fill the creases and lines that Dysport or Botox cannot resolve. Preventative measures goes a long ways. (Harold J. Kaplan, MD, Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox is great for prevention of lines by starting in your 20’s
The creases you already have may not disappear with the initial treatment, but if you keep up with doing Botox, you’ll find that the creases will get better and better over time.
Most importantly, by starting Botox now you’ll be preventing a worsening of the lines. It would be great if more individuals recognized the importance of starting Botox at an early stage as you are planning to do.
I often see patients who have let the lines become deep over years of frowning. Botox is always necessary to limit the motion of the muscle that causes the lines, because without Botox the lines will just continue to deepen.
But sometimes adding a filler is also helpful to reduce the appearance of the lines while the Botox is limiting the damage to the skin. (Kimberly Finder, MD, San Antonio Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox for glabellar lines
Botox is the best treatment for glabellar lines and you can expect to see improvement in your lines after injection. Since the lines are somewhat deep, consecutive treatments with Botox (every 3-6 months) will sequentially improve the appearance. (Gary Lelli, Jr., MD, New York Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Properly placed Botox is the best treatment for glabellar frown lines. The lines may not totally disappear but. (David A. Bray, Sr., MD, Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox helps forehead lines between the eyes, even at rest
The muscles that pull the brow together are treated with Botox (or Dysport) which relaxes the muscle and improves the lines, wrinkles and folds in that area of the face.
The thickness of the skin is not a concern when treating patients with Botox. (Theda C. Kontis, MD, Baltimore Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox is perfect for glabellar lines
Botox will weaken the muscle so that it will not be able to contract anymore in order to relax the lines in yor glabella. Even though you may not furrow your brows very often, you probably have a resting state contraction of the muscle that contributes to some degree of line production.
Botox will certianly make you happy to see these lines improve. (Daniel I. Wasserman, MD, Naples Dermatologic Surgeon)
The vertical lines in the forehead “frown area” are perfect for Botox
You will likely be quite pleased with the changes within one to two weeks following your first Botox treatment. Twenty to twenty five units would likely be about right. (Christopher J. Peers, MD, South Bend Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Vertical lines and Botox
I think you will be pleased with Botox to treat these noticeable glabellar lines. It will stop you from being able to furrow the brow, which creates these noticeable lines for you.
I think it will help alleviate some of the furrowing, which if left untreated can lead to deeper lines in the future, ultimately needing both Botox and filler to solve the problem later. (F. Victor Rueckl, MD, Las Vegas Dermatologist)
Starting young will increase your chance that you can keep from getting a fixed crease. (Esta Kronberg, MD, Houston Dermatologic Surgeon)
