Botox, Dysport, and filler injections are invasive medical procedures. As such, it is necessary that the professional performing the injections is experienced and trained properly.
While many nurse injectors may fulfill these qualities, board certification by the Plastic Surgery or Facial Plastic Surgery boards is a clear indicator of both proper training and experience.
Also, although adverse reactions or complications from these procedures are infrequent, a board certified physician is best qualified to immediately identify and properly treat them if they occur. (Maxwell Furr, MD, Portland Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Who Can Inject Botox?
Each state has its own laws in regards to who can inject botox. In all states, a physician (MD/DO) can inject and in other cases RN’s or PA’s or DMD’s can inject as well, sometimes under the guidance of a physician.
Botox has a lot of artistic components to it. I am biased in that I believe you should chose someone whose passion is facial enhancement is better than someone who dabbles in it. (Anil R. Shah, MD, Chicago Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox injectors can include physicians, RNs, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. It is critically important to make sure the injector understands the underlying muscle anatomy of the face and has years of experience placing this product to obtain the absolute natural effect. (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Its your face, so get injections from a board certified provider.
Cosmetic injections with botulinum (Dysport or Botox) are not like getting your hair or nails done. Be prudent!
Appropriately board certified providers (plastic surgeons, dermatologists) are most likely get you the results you’re looking for, with the least possible risk.
I tell patients to avoid nurse injectors or physicians who aren’t full time cosmetic providers with the appropriate board certification to prove it. If a nurse is available at your derm or plastic surgeon’s office, politely request the doctor.
They should be very accommodating. (Randolph Capone, MD, FACS, Baltimore Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Trust a Board Certified Aesthetic Injector
In order to purchase Botox you need to be a physician. Some physicians have more experience injecting Botox than others. Typically, board certified dermatologists and board certified plastic surgeons have gone through additional training for injecting Botox.
Some practices let nurses, physician’s assistants or nurse practitioners inject. In our practice, only the board certified dermatologists inject Botox or any injectables. If your injector has been trained and gone through additional Botox injection courses, they typically list them on their websites, or are happy to share this information with patients.
Don’t be afraid to ask who will be doing the injections and how much experience they have before you are injected. (Robert A. Weiss, MD, Baltimore Dermatologic Surgeon)
Injector Qualifications
Professionals who are qualified to inject Botox include a Physician (M. D.), Physician Assistant (P. A.), Nurse Practitioner (N. P.), and a Registered Nurse Injector (R. N.). As long as the healthcare professional has one of these credentials and has had proper training on injectables they are qualified to inject Botox for patients.
I would ask the person injecting me what their credentials are, where they received their training and how long they have been injecting to ensure they are capable of treating you with Botox. (Peter J. Capizzi, MD, Charlotte Plastic Surgeon)
