Twenty units is a standard dose for the frown lines, or 11’s. This can help the forehead some, but the forehead as an additional area will take more doses of Botox.

My patients vary in their frown line (11’s) dosing. Some patients, and younger patients may prefer 5 units for each side or a total of 10 units. Others may need 15 units on each side. The maximum effect is at about 10 to 14 days and then is slowly wears away over months. At day one there is usually no effect. In addition, deep frown lines may need careful placement of some Juvederm to correct the loss of volume as the crease may continue to be there, even if the frown muscles are severely weakened.

There are numerous variables that can determine the amount of botox required (number of units) including severity of lines, age of the patient, and gender (men usually require more), as well as reconstitution of product.

Number of Botox Units

The number of units to treat frown lines in unique to each patient depending on the severity of their fine lines and wrinkles and their aesthetic goals. It requires approximately 3 to 5 days to begin to see visible results with a peak effect at 2 weeks post treatment.

I generally use 20-25 units to treat the glabella or frown lines. There are some patients who may require supplemental hyaluronic acid filler to fill in a permanent crease if the creases remain after adequately relaxing the muscles that cause these lines. It does take time to see the results, so wait a full week before you decide if you need a touch up or an additional procedure. Very deep or etched lines in this area might require a small amount of filler after the botox.

I inject anywhere from 10 – 30 units in the glabella depending upon the strength and thickness of the glabella muscles.

If the lines are etched and deep, I usually inject with Botox and see the patient back in 2-4 weeks and then inject a 1/2 syringe of filler.

When considering Botox to the Glabella (region between the eyebrows) and the Forehead there are several things to consider. First, chose a reputable doctor. Plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and ENT facial plastic surgeons usually have the most experience with Botox and are adept in helping you achieve the look you want.

Second, it generally takes between 5-7 days to see the effects of Botox injections. Give the Botox time to do what it is supposed to do. Lastly, 20 units of Botox may not be enough to resolve heavy lines and if the muscles in that area are larger and more active than average, then more Botox may be necessary.
