How Many Units Of Botox For Face?
The amount of botox used is different for each patient. A young thin woman will likely require a lower dose of Botox than a larger heavily muscled male.
The amount of Botox used needs to be determined by an experienced injector based upon the needs of each patient.
I have seen people that require 20 units for a full upper face treatment and others that require more than 80 units. (David Schlessinger, MD, Long Island Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Units in botox = shots
Typically, each shot of botox has 2.5 units of botox in it. Therefore, if an area usually takes 4 shots, then that’s 10 units of botox.
Depending on how much muscle block you need (determined by the inverse balance between line reduction and movement retention), more or less may be used in a particular area.
Frown treatments can range from 7.5 to 15 units. Forehead can range from 10-20 units and crows feet are typically 15-20 units. (Richard W. Westreich, MD, Manhattan Facial Plastic Surgeon)
How many Botox units
That depends on how many areas one wants to treat.
Here are some AVERAGE numbers
- Frown lines – 20 units (range 15-30)
- Forehead – 20 units (range 10-30)
- Crow’s feet – 20 units (range 15-20)drbader. (Robert S. Bader, MD, FAAD, Boca Raton Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox units
As an expert injector for over 15 years I have found the average number of Botox units for the following areas to usually be:
- glabella/mid-brow area 20-25 units.
- Crows feet: 15-25 units.
- Forehead: 4-10 units.
Other small muscle groups on the face such as the chin, the DAOs, the bunny line muscles: about 5 units per area.
- Platysmal bands on neck: 50+ units.
- Axillary hyperhidrosis: 100 Units.
It all depends on what areas you want to treat.
For a beginner, we often recommend 20 units which will calm the glabellar complex. Great place to start. Predictable results and a real pleaser for those who have never experienced Botox . (Steven Swengel, MD, Los Gatos Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox injections are very individualized and must be designed for your specific needs. You need to work with your injector to determine what would be best for you. In my practice I don’t charge by the units but rather by the area.
I prefer this way because I can add more units to achieve the desired result without charging the patient more. Most importantly you need to find an injector with whom you feel comfortable. You should not be struggling with how many units are necessary. (Katrinka L. Heher, MD, Boston Oculoplastic Surgeon)
I am a huge believer that Botox should be used to minimize wrinkle while still having movement….not completely eliminating it and looking frozen. With that said, if you are young and have minimal wrinkles you may be able to spread the 20 units to the 11’s and the crow’s feet.
It would be a low dose to minimize future wrinkles. If you have established wrinkles, 20 units is quite low. The best thing to do is ask the person providing the units how much should be used in each area to get the result you want.
I am not really sure how you can decide what to buy if you have not done it before. Perhaps consider a different location where they take the time to help you get the best results rather than just packaging it. (Rodger Shortt, FRCSC, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
Botox packages
I caution every one to stay away from any salon or “spa” that pre sells the medical treatment as if it is a bagel. Your cosmetic goals are highly individual and whether or not you will benefit from Botox and then how much can only be determined after you are evaluated by a skilled, experienced and qualified PHYSICIAN and not a sales person selling packages. (Edwin Ishoo, MD, Cambridge Facial Plastic Surgeon)
How much Botox to buy?
The action or efficacy of Botox in improving wrinkles is dependent on several things, the amount used being one of them. Everyone is deifferent so it is best to be evaluated by a physician who treats a lot of Botox patient.
He/She can examine you, determine the degree pre botox appearance of your wrinkles, assess how much correction you want and give you an idea how many units will be needed. You also have to consider if you are treating forehead or frown lines or crow’s feet or all of the above. (J. Vicente P. Poblete, MD, Cleveland Plastic Surgeon)
I do not believe in package deals. We are talking about medical services, not buying items by the dozens. You need a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who can calculate what would be appropriate for you.
A package deal is truly not a deal! Unlike the fillers, which can be stored for you, it’s use it or lose it with Botox. Too little, not a good outcome. Too much-either wasted or overused-not a good outcome. (Robert L. Kraft, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Botox 20 or 40 units
I always tell my patients how many units they need for each area they want treated.
Botox treatment plans are personalized because everyone requires different amounts depending on what areas they want treated. Please seek treatment from a qualified professional who spends the time to give you an individualized treatment plan. (Jennifer Trent, MD, FAAD, Sarasota Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox Dosing
The amount of Botox used varies based on each individual, the areas being treated and the goals. It’s best to see an experienced injector who can evaluate you and make the appropriate treatment recommendation. I am generally weary of any Botox “deals”.
If however you are only treating a single area, then 20 units is likely sufficient but not always. (Sejal Shah, MD, New York Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox 20 or 40 units
If you are confused about which Botox package to buy, it would suggest to me that your injector is not giving proper guidance on your treatment plan. I personally evaluate every client and make an individualized treatment plan.
I let every client know exactly how much Botox I recommend. There shouldn’t be any confusion in terms of your Botox dose. Make sure that you are seeing an experienced physician for the safest and best results. (Richard Ort, MD, Lone Tree Dermatologic Surgeon)
