I hate how much gums I have showing. Any suggestions?
In-Person Examination by Periodontist Is Best
Jun 29, 2016
Thanks
for posting your photos. You have a wonderful smile. There are a number of
treatment options designed to reduce the amount of gums that show for people
who are concerned about gummy smiles. Recommending a specific procedure,
however, requires the detailed results of a physical assessment to diagnose the
cause of the gummy smile. As other specialists previously responded, it’s
possible that you would benefit from oral surgery to reposition your jaw. That
may be enough, or you may also…
Would I benefit from a gum lift?
A Gum Lift Can Help
Jun 29, 2016
Thank
you for your question. Based on the photos provided, it appears you could
benefit from laser gum contouring (sometimes called a gum lift). If you are
considering orthodontic work for your teeth, your orthodontist will be able to
diagnose the cause of your gummy smile and suggest a treatment plan. Gum
contouring combined with a lip lowering procedure is often the best approach
for reducing the appearance of a gummy smile.
Will Lip Lift Make Gummy Smile Worse?
Lip Lift May Work Against You
Jun 29, 2016
A lip
lift will expose more of your gums and create more of a gummy smile. Others
have suggested getting BOTOX injections, which weaken the muscles that lift
your upper lip. That will produce a more relaxed smile, but remember that BOTOX
is a temporary treatment that usually wears off after about 3 to 4 months. Good
luck to you.
Which procedures should I be looking into to fix my smile?
Think About a Smile Makeover — and a Consultation
Jun 29, 2016
Thank
you for including photos with your question. At a glance, a smile makeover may
work for you, but the best discussion about specific procedures or treatments
is informed by X-rays and a complete assessment of your facial anatomy. Find a
board-certified periodontist or orthodontist who can diagnose the reason for
the asymmetry shown in your photos. Good luck.
Am I (post braces) a candidate for a gum lift procedure?
Consult a Board-Certified Periodontist
Jun 29, 2016
Thank
you for your question and reaching out to this forum for answers. The best way
to decide on a treatment plan for your gummy smile is to consult with an
experienced, board-certified periodontist – a person who specializes in keeping
gums healthy and looking their best. Based on your photo, it appears you could
benefit from gum contouring combined with lip lowering – a procedure I helped
pioneer. The lip lowering procedure only requires a local anesthetic, and it’s
an excellent alt…
Can You Get a Gum Lift Before Invisalign or Braces?
This Warrants In-Person Examination
Jun 29, 2016
: Hi, Live and Learn. As others have
pointed out, the first step before getting either braces or a gum lift is to
have a thorough examination by qualified specialists to ensure that your
treatment plan is appropriate. A periodontist can decide if treatment for a
gummy smile is appropriate, and an orthodontist can subsequently discuss how
Invisalign or braces can help. It’s also possible that you’ll be happy with
your smile after a gum lift and elect not to have your teeth straightened.
Should teeth bleaching be done before or after a gum lift?
Gum Lift Before Bleaching
Jun 29, 2016
Gum
contouring, which is sometimes called a gum lift, removes excess gum tissue
around the teeth. This exposes more of the teeth, making them look longer.
Accordingly, I would suggest undergoing a gum lift before bleaching the teeth,
so that the newly exposed portions of the teeth also benefit. At my practice, I
often combine gum contouring with lip lowering surgery to reduce the appearance
of a gummy smile. For the best possible results, I recommend looking for a
periodontist with…
