Would I be a good candidate for a chin implant?

There are two options for a recessive chin. You can consider a chin implant or sliding genioplasty. When the chin is very recessed and needs 7-9 mm of added projection I prefer the sliding genioplasty. When the chin is less recessed and only requires 5-7 mm of projection I will consider an implant. I some cases, a large implant can make the chin look wide and more masculine which is fine in most males. Both procedures are performed in the office with intravenous anesthesia.

When a chin is very recessive and needs 9 mm of advancement I recommend a sliding genioplasty procedure. I perform both genioplasties and the placement of implants, and when a large implant is placed in a women it can sometimes look wide and masculine. The genioplasty procedure brings your own natural chin forward and looks more feminine. The procedure is performed in the office with sedation anesthesia and does not affect your bite. Most people resume a normal diet the same day.

I did not see your presurgical photos but your chin does appear a bit narrow and prominent. Silicone implants are easily removed but high density polyethylene implants can be difficult to remove because of tissue ingrowth. In addition, after one year, the tissue expansion created by the implant may not return to normal or presurgical condition. Chin implant with cleft preservation?

A custom or even a stock implant can give you a permanent improvement to your lack of chin projection. In some cases the cleft of the soft tissue is unaffected in other cases it can be diminished. Custom implants cost significantly more and will not preserve your cleft better than a stock implant. If you implant is created by a cleft in your chin bone a better option to preserve the cleft is a sliding genioplasty.

The lateral projection and vertical facial balance is much improved with the implant. I’m not sure your concerns in the frontal view? The lip can sometimes appear lowered when an implant is placed through an intraoral incision but usually improves with time. You can always have the implant removed and your face will likely return to what it looked like before surgery.
