Can Botox Help Under Eye Wrinkles?
Botox placed under the eye may help in some cases. In my experience these tend to be younger patients with strong muscles causing wrinkles during squinting, smiling etc.
In the case where the wrinkles are related to skin laxity and thinning, laser resurfacing is a better solution. In some severe cases a transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty (surgery to remove excess skin) is needed. (Jared Mallalieu, DO, Annapolis General Surgeon)
Although Botox can be injected for some wrinkles under the eyes, generally this is not my preferred treatment option to address this area.
Most of the wrinkles and lines that occur in this area of the face are due to a loss of volume in the midface and under eye area.
This loss of volume creates an appearance of under eye wrinkles in a manner similar to how a deflated balloon might look. As such, I feel that replacing volume in this area with facial filler is a much better option for addressing this issue, and gives a much more natural result by “re-inflating” the wrinkled eyelid area.
Restylane is my preferred filler for treating this area specifically. In more advanced cases of under eye wrinkles, blepharoplasty or laser resurfacing may give much more significant improvement in this area. Still, there are some cases when small volumes of Botox injections in this area would be beneficial.
I would advise you to be cautious, however, as too much Botox in this area can cause a temporary effect of less movement of the lower eyelid with smiling. Studies of non-verbal communication have shown us that this lack of movement can inadvertently give people the impression that your smile is not as sincere.
This is a great example of why it is so important to seek consultation with an experienced injector who is very comfortable with advanced injection techniques around the eyes if this treatment is something that you are considering. (Gregory D. Lewen, MD, FACS, Miami Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Botox is awesome at getting rid of wrinkles around the eyes! Botox stops the little muscles from creating the wrinkles, even if their present when you smile big some of the fine lines with time can go away.
I think it’s a great idea to use some Botox in that area and then do some aggressive skincare treatments to help heal the skin while it is not as active.
Within a month or two you will see a great improvement in the quality of that skin! (Mark T. Boschert, MD, Saint Louis Plastic Surgeon)
If your lower eyelid wrinkles develop when you are smiling or laughing, Botox may be able to treat them effectively.
I would recommend you see a board certified plastic surgeon for an in-person evaluation as this is the best way to identify whether Botox will help. (Nelson Castillo, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
Botox for Eye Wrinkles
Botox can safely be injected into the Crow’s feet but often causes swelling when injected under the eyes. (Michele S. Green, MD, New York Dermatologist)
In some individuals, Botox injected under the eye can open up the eyes and improve wrinkles. If the skin is too saggy, Botox will not help. It is important to be assessed by an experienced injector. (Martie Gidon, MD, FRCPC, Toronto Dermatologist)
Botox can be injected under the eyes for wrinkles. Usually a lower dose is used. It is also good for lower eyelid muscle spasm. Please see a board certified plastic surgeon for evaluation. (Thomas Guillot, MD, Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon)
As Botox weakens muscles, injecting the lower lid wrinkle scan make that muscle that holds your lower lid against your eye sag. That can lead to the lid pulling away form the eye or just sagging and showing the whites of your eyes below the pupil. (Julio Garcia, MD, Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon)
Botox can be injected in the lower eyelid region. But it has to be done for the appropriate reasons and generally in small doses. (Naveen Setty, MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)
Botox can be injected in the “crow’s feet” area to reduce eyelid wrinkling. You can only reduce wrinkling in the outer 1/3 of the lower eyelid with this technique. (Brooke R. Seckel, MD, FACS, Boston Plastic Surgeon)
Botox for under eye wrinkles
Botox is useful to treat under eye wrinkles in appropriate patients. Evaluation by an experienced physician is important because injection into the lower eyelid area may worsen the appearance if the lower eyelid has significant laxity.
It can also aggravate symptoms of dry eye in patients with that pre-existing condition. (Heidi A. Waldorf, MD, New York Dermatologist)
Under-eye wrinkles
Botox (and the other botulinum toxins) are useful in treating “dynamic” wrinkles: wrinkles due to repetitive muscle action. Lower lid wrinkles can certainly be due to this.
However, in many instances, these wrinkles are due to aging skin changes/loosening and chronic sun damage. In this situation, other treatment modalities might be more preferable. The best recommendation would be to see a well-experienced physician who has treated many patients with wrinkles in this area and who has experienced using the different modalities to treat different conditions.
He/she will be able to do a thorough evaluation and discuss the best treatment options for you. (Kenneth E. Morgenstern, MD, Philadelphia Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Botox is useful for under eyes when there is a strong muscle fold under the eyes with smiling. Botox will not help wrinkles for loose or crepey skin. (Edwin Ishoo, MD, Cambridge Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox for Eye Wrinkles
Botox is a great injectable medication to relax muscles around the eyes and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Cosmetically, it is approved for use around the eyes known as the Crow’s feet. Surgery, laser resurfacing, and fillers are also good options to improve eye wrinkles.
Schedule a consultation with a board certified oculoplastic surgeon to discuss your case. (Samuel Baharestani, MD, FACS, Long Island Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Under eye wrinkles are tough. When injected under the eye, Botox can cause your lower eyelid to droop which can cause tearing, redness, and irritation of the eye. This is not aesthetically appealing! Instead, we recommend a retinol-based eye cream and surface treatments including laser treatments. (Robert S. Schmidt, MD, Richmond Facial Plastic Surgeon)

I don’t recommend Botox in this are because it will cause a prominent bag. I would consider doing laser resurfacing or a chemical peel. (Joshua Halpern, MD, PA, Tampa Plastic Surgeon)
