How does botulinum toxin work?

Botulinum toxin is a protein that can disrupt the transmission of a pulse from the nerve end to the muscle, thereby causing muscle paralysis.

With normal impulse transmission, the neuromediator acetylcholine is released at the junction of the nerve end with the muscle (synapse), which causes muscle contraction.
