How does botulinum toxin work?

Botulinum toxin is a protein that can disrupt the transmission of a pulse from the nerve end to the muscle, thereby causing muscle paralysis.

With normal impulse transmission, the neuromediator acetylcholine is released at the junction of the nerve end with the muscle (synapse), which causes muscle contraction.

This is a rather complicated process. First, the bubbles containing acetylcholine, go to the membrane (outer shell) of the nerve end.

To release acetylcholine, the vesicles must merge with the membrane, which is impossible without a special “fusion complex” consisting of several proteins (SNARE complex).

Botulinum toxin passes through the membrane of the nerve end inward, and then “cuts off” certain fusion proteins from the fusion complex.

Each type of botulinum toxin has its own favorite target. For example, botulinum toxin type A, which is a part of botox, attacks the protein SNAP-25.

Without a full SNARE, the bubbles with acetylcholine can no longer merge with the membrane and remain inside the nerve end. In the end, despite the fact that the nerve fiber continues to send commands, muscle contractions no longer occur. And yet it is poison

Doses of botulinum toxin, administered during cosmetic procedures, are very small (several times less than those used in medicine and hundreds of times less than the lethal dose).

All that is enough for this amount of toxin is to relax the muscles lying near the injection site. And yet, the very fact that a deadly poison injects into the skin can not but disturb. And if the toxin somehow spreads further than it is supposed to? Can it cause any serious side effects?

According to the FDA, between 1989 and 2003 Botox injections led to the death of patients in 28 cases. In 2008, the FDA issued a warning that the use of Botox could cause breathing problems and other serious health problems.

In order to calm down the clients of cosmetic salons, we note that practically in all cases, the described side effects arose in the medical application of Botox, mainly in the treatment of spastic paralysis in children under 16 years old.

The FDA notes that in the US, the use of Botox against child spastic paralysis is made “off label”, that is, unofficially, which means that the doctor selects doses at his own risk, based on published data, his experience and experience of colleagues. In contrast to cosmetic procedures in the treatment of spastic paralysis, significant doses are required, since it is necessary to eliminate spasm in large muscles. However, due to the fact that it is still about deaths, the FDA has begun an investigation of all botulinum toxin preparations that are used in the US.

Botox May Be Right For You

And yet the risk of getting botulism, let alone dying after cosmetic injection of Botox is negligible. However, botulinum toxin can indeed spread beyond the injection and cause a number of troubles.

The fact that the toxin is not programmed to fight wrinkles, but just blindly affects all the muscles that can “reach out.” If the poison seeps into a place where it was not planned to be introduced, the effect may turn out to be tragicomic.

For example, after an injection made in the eyebrow area, the poison can get into the muscles of the upper eyelid, which for the next 2-3 months will remain semi-covered – the eye can not be opened or closed completely. This will lead to dry eyes, lacrimation and general discomfort.

Another complication is the lowering of the corners of the lips, which leads to the effect of the “Greek tragic mask” and salivation. There is also the asymmetry of the face due to uneven relaxation of the muscles on the right and left side (curve smile), difficulty with swallowing and hoarseness of the voice (partial paralysis of the larynx muscles).

All these side effects are listed in the annotation to the drug, which also gives recommendations for their prevention. In particular, the drug is recommended to be administered gradually, in small doses, observing the reaction. The patient is explained that the injection site can not be combed so as not to disperse the toxin around the surrounding tissues. However, sometimes there are unexpected side effects.

Botox Surgery New Orleans

For example, in a small part of patients, after botulinum toxin injections, severe headaches resemble migraines. And sometimes it happens the other way round – headaches that have tormented a person for years, after such injections suddenly miraculously pass.

One of the patients (the case is described in the medical journal) after the Botox treatment has acquired a persistent metallic taste in the mouth, which “pleased” her exactly as much as the wrinkles that were smoothed out. The mechanism of these side effects is still unknown, which means that further research can still bring surprises.

The desire of people at all costs to become rejuvenated and to get prettier and their willingness to pay a lot of money for this led to the fact that modern risky methods are often used in modern cosmetology.

Botox Training New Orleans

It is well known that procedures such as liposuction (surgical removal of excess fat), phenol peel and mesotherapy can end up badly for the patient, and in very rare cases even lead to death (liposuction sometimes causes severe bleeding, phenol has a toxic effect on the heart , and after injections of mesotherapy in isolated cases develops a difficult-to-treat “body-eating” infection of connective tissue).

Against this background, the use of a deadly poison to smooth out wrinkles does not look anything out of the ordinary.

Most experts believe that with the correct choice of dose and method of administration of the drug, as well as if the patient follows all the recommendations of a specialist, the risk of side effects is small.

And yet, the fact that botulinum toxin is a poison that easily penetrates into the nerve tissue and selectively affects the molecular structures responsible for the transmission of the nerve impulse makes one take this medicine with great care.

And it is worth considering whether it is reasonable to expose your nerves (and possibly even brain cells) to the attack of sausage poison only in order to erase from your face mimic wrinkles – traces of reflection and smiles for 3-4 months.
