Botox Injection Locations
Botox anatomic locations
Botox is traditionally injected in the glabella, forehead and crows feet.
It can also be injected above the lip to treat lipstick-bleed lines, the chin to decrease rippling and lower face to decrease perioral rhitides.
Other areas can be treated with fillers, laser and chemical peels. (Avron Lipschitz, MD, Stuart Plastic Surgeon)
Locations of Face for Botox
Botox is a great product for fine wrinkles around the eyes and forehead and the mouth. Botox does not help with deep lines on the cheeks or around deeper lines on the forehead or lips.
Filler can be considered after consultation with an eyelid and facial plastic surgery expert. (Sean Paul, MD, Austin Oculoplastic Surgeon)
The upper face will give the most natural result and bang for your buck
Botox is good for dynamic lines (those that deepen with movement) and not so good for static lines (those that look deep when the face is relaxed. Botox is remarkably good at improving forehead lines, the 11’s, and the crows feet.
It is far less effective for wrinkles of the lower face and neck. Improvements may be made in these areas, however, there is greater risk that natural facial expressions will be affected. (Anand D. Patel, MD, Brookfield Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox for dynamic wrinkles – where to treat
Botox works well for dynamic wrinkles (and not well for etched in wrinkles). You can put it in any muscle that you want to weaken. Locations that I like to inject on the face:
- forehead to reduce horizontal lines
- between the eyebrows to reduce 11’s
- sides of eyes to reduce crows feet
- sides of nose to reduce bunny lines
- upper lip to soften pucker lines and evert the upper lip
- masseter muscles to slim the face and help with problems related to grinding/clenching of teeth
- DAO muscles to help soften downward-turned lips
- chin to reduce “orange peel” dimpled lookIf you have a lot of etched-in lines, you may do better with a resurfacing procedure such as co2 laser.
An experienced provider will be able to create a good plan for you. (Melissa Chiang, MD, FAAD, Houston Dermatologic Surgeon)
Injection sites
Botox can be administered in 3 FDA approved locations. These are the forehead, to treat horizontal wrinkles, the glabella in between the eyes, and the lateral sides of the eye to treat crows feet wrinkles. Some providers use Botox in other locations but these are considered off-label use. (Sugene Kim, MD, FACS, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
What areas of the face can I have Botox injected?
In our practice, Botox is used in 3 locations: These are
- vertical corrugator lines between the eyebrows
- crows feet around the lateral eyelids
- horizontal lines across the forehead from the frontais muscle
It is important to have experienced injectors to know exactly where to put the Botox for maximum and a natural effect (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox Injection Locations
The top three locations I inject botulinum toxin is between the eyes (the corrugator and procerus muscles), the forehead (glabellar muscle), and around the eyes (orbicularis oculi muscle). However, anywhere you can reproduce a wrinkle by making an expression (for example, wrinkles around your mouth by puckering your lips), I can soften with this toxin. (Bobby Buka, MD, New York Dermatologist)
Where can I have Botox injected?
Neuromodulator injections (e.g. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) is the most common non-invasive procedure performed in Aesthetic Surgery. The most common locations treated in the face are:
- Glabella (in between you eyebrows)
- ForeheadCrow’s feet (on the side of your eyes)
- Bunny lines (on the side of your nose)
Botox can be used to create what is known as a “chemical brow lift” and in some occasion to treat the sagging bangs seen in the neck with aging.
Another area commonly injected is the chin to prevent or treat “cobble stoning” of the area. Botox can also be injected into the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) to elevate the corner of the mouth
The masseter muscles are also a very popular area for Botox injections to reduce the bulk and improve the appereance of your jawline.
In some patients with teeth grinding this will also help. The nasolabial fold is better treated with fillers and NOT WITH BOTOX as many patients request. (Jose Rodríguez-Feliz, MD, Miami Plastic Surgeon)
Where can I use botox?
The most common locations treated with botox are the glabella (or ‘frown lines’ – area between your eyebrows) and ‘crowsfeet’ (area to the outside of your eyes). These 2 locations are also the only 2 areas approved by the FDA for treatment with botox.
Other common locations treated, which is considered ‘off-label’ by FDA, include the forehead and bunny lines (by nose). Commonly, a facial skin treatment for rejuvenation of the skin can be combined with botox treatment to help with overall facial balance and rejuvenation. (Bryan Correa, MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
Wrinkles caused by motion
Botox, Dysport and Zenomin are medicines, which treat wrinkles caused by motion. The most common areas are the 11’s lines or wrinkles, which form, in the central forehead between the eyebrow locations (also known as the glabellae).
Crow’s feet (lateral canthal lines) and forehead lines or wrinkles are a close second in my practice. Fixed lines/wrinkles elsewhere on the face are often the results of deflation of the face as a consequence of aging, descent of the soft tissues and long-term sun exposure.
These have other solutions, which can dramatically improve your appearance and skin health. (Dean L. Johnston, MD, Orlando Plastic Surgeon)
Diverse uses for Botox
Botox was first approved in the late 1970s for cosmetic use in the glabella, or central forehead lines that people often called the “11s.” Immediately after its initial approval, off label uses on many areas of the face and neck became commonly used and also very popular.
Botox has subsequently gained other FDA approvals for cosmetic use, such as for the “crows feet” around your eyes.
It is true that Botox is often used all over the face for various indications. Depending on what you need, it is a very diverse and quite useful tool, especially in the right hands.
Other common locations for Botox use include:
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Lateral eyebrow lift
- Bunny lines on the nose
- “Gummy” smile of upper lip
- Down turned corners of the mouth
- Wrinkly, puckered chin
- Neck lift and reduction of neck bands
- Fine lines, sometimes called “smokers lines,” around the mouth
- Excessive flaring of the nostrils
- Lower eyelid wrinkles and lift
- Facial shaping of thick muscles used for chewing that affect the overall shape of the face, call the masseter
Botox can even be used to reduce the size of enlarged salivary gland that can sometimes be visible in your cheeks and under your chinEven with this diverse toolbox of uses, overall facial wrinkles and skin quality are often due to sun damage as opposed to wrinkles caused by movement of muscles – which Botox targets.
If that is the case, Botox will do very little to improve this, and the resurfacing procedure with a laser or chemical peel will likely give much greater benefit. Your best bet is to seek out somebody experienced with all neuromodulators such as Botox and resurfacing procedures to see what is best for you.
To guarantee you’re receiving the highest level of care, seek out a dermatologic surgeon, oculoplastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon who is board certified and fellowship trained in one of these “core four” cosmetic specialties. (Cameron Chesnut, MD, FAAD, FACMS, Spokane Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox can treat many locations of the face
In our clinic we most commonly inject Botox in the frown lines or “11s” between the eyes. A close second is the “crow’s feet” lateral to the eyes, followed by forehead wrinkles. However, there are multiple other uses on the lower face as well, which can improve wrinkles on the nose, lips and chin.
Botox temporarily and selectively weakens muscles in the face so it is effective for wrinkles caused by facial movement. Some deep furrows are better treated with other treatments like fillers or surgery. (William Andrade, MD, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
Botox locations
Botox can help with wrinkles on your forehead, between your brows, and at the corners of your eyes. It can also help with softening your jawline, softening the platysma bands on your neck and gently lifting the corners of your mouth.
You would have to get a physical assessment to determine if Botox can help you. (Jerome Edelstein, MD, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
Botox locations
The most popular and common locations are:
- the crow’s feet (corners of the eyes)
- the “1” or “11” that form in between your eyebrows and
- Forehead/ Brow area.
There are other locations Botox can be used, such as one the jaw line, in a popular procedure called Masseter Botox, to slim and define the jaw. However, many people confuse Botox with Injectable Filler (such as Juvederm, Restylane).
Injectable Filler can also help on the other locations of the face, restoring volume where it has been lost and in the process, softening existing deep lines and wrinkles. (Cory Torgerson, MD, PhD, FRCSC, Toronto Facial Plastic Surgeon)
