Botulinum toxin is a strong poison, when ingested (when eating contaminated foods) it paralyzes the nervous system and motor activity of the muscles.

That local action is completely reversible: even multiple (more than 30) injections of Botox into one and the same place do not cause damage to either nerves or muscles. Only temporarily, for several months, the transmission of a nerve impulse to the muscle is blocked.
