Aftercare For Botox Injections
Botox aftercare instructions
Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expressions.
For my patients I provide the following aftercare instructions: please avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours after the treatment and avoid lying down flat for 4 hours after the treatment.
Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. (Alex Eshaghian, MD, PhD, Encino Physician)
Instructions after botox injection.
Here is a summary of botox aftercare that you should find useful!
- Don’t rub / touch the area and avoid makeup the day of injection
- Move muscles of the face (i.e.muscle exercises straight after) – improves results!
- Don’t lay down for 4 hours after treatment
- No excess exercise / sauna or steam room environment for 48 hours
- Avoid any medications that may induce bleeding such as aspirin
- Use arnica / ice for any bruising or blemishes (Rupert Critchley, MD, MRCGP, London Physician)
Post Treatment Instructions After Botox Injection
Instructions we give our patients after Botox injection are to avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDS or any other medications that increase a patient’s proclivity to bruise or bleed. We actually ask patients to refrain from taking these medications, ideally, for a week before their Botox injection as well.
We ask our patients not to lie down for four hours after Botox injection. We also recommend that if they work out every day, the do their daily work out before their Botox injection, but refrain from exercising after their injection.
Finally we ask patients to refrain from manipulating the areas that received the Botox injection for twenty-four hours after their treatment. (Peter Lee, MD, FACS, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
My Aftercare for Injectable Treatments
My aftercare recommendations for a Botox or filler treatment:
- Avoid strenuous physical activity (e.g., cardio workout) until the next day. Excess muscle movement and blood flow may contribute to swelling and excessive dispersion of product.
- Avoid massaging the treated area (unless instructed to do so by your provider.
- Avoid sun and/or cold outdoor activities until redness/swelling disappears. Inflamed skin is more sensitive and prone to pigment changes. Ice can be applied for 2-3 days after the procedure.
- Avoid direct contact of the ice with skin, as this can result in cold-related skin damage.
Sleep with head elevated for one night. Two pillows are usually enough, and a good rule of thumb is to keep the head higher than the heart. - Use Tylenol to alleviate minor pain. Avoid aspirin-containing products or anti-inflammatory medications (Motrin, Aleve, etc.) for 2-3 days after the procedure, as these may increase the risk of bleeding/bruising. Resume skin care products, such as retinoids and glycolic acids, the next day.
Remember, it will take a little time for your results to reach their full potential. (Anand D. Patel, MD, Brookfield Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Aftercare for Botox Treatments
One key advantage of Botox over many other cosmetic procedures is the minimal downtime and pre/post operative restrictions associated with treatment. With only a few minor restrictions in activity, a patient can resume their normal daily lives immediately after treatment.
The key advice is to avoid your daily workout or alcohol on the day of treatment. I also advise patients not to rub or touch their face immediately after treatment to reduce any chance of introducing bacteria to the injection site.
As always, the best advice is to seek a highly qualified and dedicated aesthetic medical practitioner who can guide you towards the most appropriate options and results for you. (Tracy Mountford, MBBS, London Physician)
Botox Aftercare
Very little really. Don’t rub the spots and don’t lie down for 4 hours. Obviously, stooping over and scrubbing the floors for 3 hours, or sitting in a hot tub for and hour are also not great ideas either. (Bruce Saal, MD, Los Gatos Dermatologic Surgeon)
Post treatment instructions after Botox
Post treatment instructions after Botox Injections include not massaging the area and not laying flat for the first 4 hours after the procedure. Make-up can be applied immediately after the procedure to camouflage any swelling or bruising that is present. (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Instructions after Botox treatment
Each physician has her own instructions. Some recommend not moving the muscles, some recommend exercising those muscles more; some ask the patient not to lay down flat, others don’t care. So ask your physician what she has found the most helpful for her patients. (Heidi A. Waldorf, MD, New York Dermatologist)
Post-Botox Instructions
I usually advise patients not to do any major massage in the areas that were treated. There is a small chance that this could make the Botox diffuse to other muscles that you don’t want to treat.
Also, since botox is injected, there is always the potential of bruising even with the best of hands. Therefore, we recommend avoiding any strenuous activity or exercise for 3-4 hours after as this could increase the possibility of bruising.
If there is mild bruising, then ice packs can help with this. (Sapna A. Patel, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Botox Injection Aftercare
The most important thing so understand with Botox is the product can spread to adjacent tissues. Following your injection it is important that you stay upright for at least four hours and avoid exercise for 24 hours.
There is usually very little bruising with Botox, however, avoiding aspirin and NSAIDs prior to treatment is a good idea. Some patients use Arnica before and after treatment to minimize any bruising. If you are prone to cold sores a discussion with your practitioner beforehand about prevention. (Robert W. Sheffield, MD, Santa Barbara Plastic Surgeon)
Botox – A lunch time procedure
Botox is what we like to call a “lunch time procedure” because it is a quick, easy and without down time. There is usually no trace of it immediately afterwards. I advise my patients to avoid bending, exercising or lying down for 2-3 hours after receiving a Botox injection. (Steven Bernstein, MD, Montreal Dermatologic Surgeon)
Post Botox Instructions
Botox is one of the leading cosmetic treatments done around the world. Common cosmetic usages include wrinkle reduction and Hyperhidrosis. Typically, most patients can return their normal activity shorty after treatment. As a precaution it is recommended that patients stay upright for 4 hours, and additionally no exercising for 24 hours post treatment.
Always discuss common side effects prior to your treatment with a Board Certified Dermatologist. (Nissan Pilest, MD, Irvine Dermatologic Surgeon)
