Botox can be injected “all over the face”, but in very specific areas that have been shown to be safe. The three most common areas are the crows feet, between the eyebrows, and the forehead.
But there are dozens of locations Botox can be injected into. It really depends on your personal profile. That is the cool thing about Botox, it is totally personalized to each and every patient. (Brian Arslanian, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
Botox may be helpful for wrinkles exacerbated by dynamic muscle activity. An example of this would be the crow’s feet area outside of the eye sockets, where softening the muscles there can minimize the dynamic lines and wrinkles.
However, static wrinkles that are there in lines that are there all the time, even at rest, are not going to be helped by Botox.
In fact, the problem is in the skin and the skin resurfacing and even face lifting can be tremendously helpful in people with severe pan facial lines and wrinkles.
The best thing is to see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who can perform any or all of these modalities, whether it is skin resurfacing with lasers, chemical peels or dermabrasion, or face lifting surgery in addition to judicious use of Botox. (Richard A. D’Amico, MD, FACS, Englewood Plastic Surgeon)
In the hands of an expert injector, Botox can be used to soften lines in numerous areas of the face. For generalized wrinkles of the face, I would recommend a holistic approach to line softening which could include use of light devices, chemical peels, dermal filers along with Botox at different stages of the management timeline. (Praven Chetty, MD, Kelowna Physician)
Botox can treat lines and wrinkles on the forehead, eyebrows, and other areas of the face and neck.
Botox is FDA approved to treat the facial lines in between the eyebrows. Other common areas to treat with Botox are the forehead, crow’s feet, upper lip, masseters, and neck. (Ava Shamban, MD, Santa Monica Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox can be injected in many areas of the face
Botox is most commonly injected into the forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes. It works by relaxing the muscles that cause the wrinkles to form in the first place, and works very well to reduce and even eliminate wrinkles in these three areas.
Other areas Botox can be used are in the masseter muscle to slim the jawline, the “bunny lines” at the bridge of the nose, and to reduce a gummy smile. Botox should not be used to try to reduce marionette lines or nasolabial folds; these wrinkles are due to volume loss rather than muscle movement and are best treated with fillers.
Please see a board-certified facial plastic surgeon for a consultation to come up with a treatment plan customized for your concerns. (Jonathan Kulbersh, MD, Charlotte Facial Plastic Surgeon)
For the most part Botox is for the upper face. It’s for the wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. There are many exceptions to this but they are less common and really vary whether you’ll get a good result from these areas or not.
They include the corners of the mouth, the lip lines, etc. The most common place people would like to see wrinkles improved that botox really doesn’t help much is in the cheeks or jowl area.
Because botox only works by relaxing the underlying muscle that is what defines what wrinkles will benefit or not. (Justin Harper, MD, Columbus Physician)
Different Treatments for Different Wrinkles
BOTOX is designed to reduce specific types of lines and wrinkles that are created by facial muscles that contract and relax as you change expression. The ingredient used in BOTOX temporarily relaxes these muscles, minimizing the appearance of those “dynamic” wrinkles.
These include crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, frown lines between the brows, and horizontal forehead lines, all of which are FDA-approved BOTOX treatment areas. Other wrinkles are caused by the natural aging process, exposure to the sun, and other environmental causes.
Fillers such as JUVÉDERM or Restylane are better for adding volume to those areas. (Suzanne Bruce, MD, Houston Dermatologic Surgeon)
What areas on the face can Botox be injected
The areas on the face that Botox can be injected depend on the approved indications, experience of the doctor doing treatments and the concerns that patients have. Even though, some areas are not formally approved, the evidence suggests that Botox can be injected in all areas of the face.
These concerns need to be discussed with the doctor performing the procedure prior to having it done. (Mariusz Sapijaszko, MD, FRCPC, Edmonton Dermatologic Surgeon)
What Facial Areas Botox Can Be Used on
Botox is commonly used for the temporary smoothing of glabellar lines (also called frown lines), the smile lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), forehead lines and has been safely used in these areas by many practitioners for many years.
However, injectors with more expertise can treat other areas of the face for a rejuvenated appearance including:
- Reducing the fine lines known as “bunny lines” on the sides of the noseSoftening the appearance of neck bands
- Raising the corners of the mouth
- Tightening the jaw line
- Lifting & Shaping the eyebrows
- Reducing nasal flaringSmoothing out the “orange peel” look of the skin
While many clinics can perform the more common Botox procedures, I believe patients should seek out an experienced injector who has advanced knowledge of facial anatomy, enjoys the artistry of cosmetic skin surgery and takes a collaborative approach with their patients to ensure beautiful natural results. (Anil Sharma, MD, Edmonton Otolaryngologist)
Botox is commonly used to treat wrinkles in areas such as: frown lines (glabella), smile lines (crows feet), lips (corners of mouth and upper lip), forehead, and neck bands. (Jed H. Horowitz, MD, FACS, Orange County Plastic Surgeon)
What are the areas of the face toget botox?
Botox reduced wrinkles by selectively weakening certain facial muscles that cause the unwanted wrinkles. The most common places to start treatment with botox are the frown lines (11’s), the smiles lines in the eyes (crow’s feet), the forehead lines (long lines running across), and a mild brow lift.
If you have never had botox but you are considering getting botox these areas are good places to start. More advanced injection include the corner of the mouth (for a lift), the upper lip, the lower eyelids, the necklines and the chin.
Wrinkling in those areas can also be improved with botox but a more advanced technique injection is necessary. (Myriam Loyo, MD, Portland Facial Plastic Surgeon)
The “bread and butter” areas of Botox are the between the brows, the upper forehead, and the eyes crows feet areas. More finesse areas of injection include the bunny lines on the side of the nose, the lower angle/corners of the mouth, the vertical lip lines when you pucker the lips, and the vertical neck bands caused by the aging platysmas muscle. (T.G. Khan, DO, FACS, Fort Lee Oculoplastic Surgeon)
Botox for Pan-Facial Wrinkles: Pick Your Battles
The most common areas for Botox in my practice are:
- Glabella. Frown Lines. Lose the 11’s.
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead wrinkles.
- Vertical Lip Lines.
- Bunny nose.
- Eyebrow ‘commas’.
- DAO (down turned corners of the mouth).
Remember that: Botox is ideal for dynamic wrinkles (those wrinkles made worse by animation.) Filler is ideal for volume loss. Botox shines in the upper half of the face. Filler shines in the lower half of the face. Most aging faces need a combination of toxin, volume, lifting and resurfacing.
Not all need to be accomplished at once, but one tool does not fix everything. (Luke J. Curtsinger, MD, Savannah Plastic Surgeon)
Botox, fillers and lasers for optimal results
Botox is an FDA approved drug that can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles safely, when in the right hands. An aesthetic Botox treatment can typically be used on the forehead, glabella (frown lines), crows feet, masseters (jawline) and platysmal bands (neck bands) to create a soft, rested look.
However, because you say wrinkles are across your entire face, you would probably get the best result with a combined treatment of dermal fillers and/or fractionated lasers. While dermal fillers replace lost volume, lasers can eliminate fine lines, improve texture and pore size and reduce pigmentation for a rejuvenated look.
I recommend meeting with a board certified cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your options. (Steven Bernstein, MD, Montreal Dermatologic Surgeon)
Botox is best for dynamic wrinkles
Botox is best for dynamic expression lines, such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines. It can also be used for “bunny lines,” which are those wrinkles that appear when the nose is scrunched.
For wrinkles that show at rest and deeper lines like nasolabial folds or marionette lines, a dermal filler such as Juvederm or Restylane may be a better choice. Laser resurfacing can also be a good choice for deep wrinkles.
I suggest visiting a board-certified dermatologist for an in-person consultation to evaluate your wrinkles and determine the best treatment plan. (Kimberly Butterwick, MD, San Diego Dermatologic Surgeon)
