Preventative Botox: Treating wrinkles before they form
Patients are understanding prevention of wrinkles is far better than treating wrinkles what have already formed.
Preventative botox requires less product and oftentimes more time between treatments. (John L. Burns Jr., MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)
Younger people can often have longer intervals between Botox injections
While Botox is great for helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles that are already present, I am a firm believer that Botox can be used in a preventative fashion to help prevent the appearance of wrinkles.
This can start at any age, but is a great option for those people who use a lot of facial expressions and are prone to develop more permanent wrinkles in the future. Botox lasts for 3-4 months in almost all patients.
However, for patients using Botox to prevent future wrinkles, Botox can be started at 3-4 month intervals to see the effect and what these wrinkles will look like after the treatment. After several courses of Botox over a year or so, it is very possible that you might realize that you don’t need the Botox every 4 months, but rather every 5-6 months as the muscles become slightly weaker.
If this effect is noted, it is very wise to spread out the treatments as much as possible so that the muscles don’t thin too much. (Don Mehrabi, MD, Beverly Hills Dermatologist)
Think of botox first as treatment, then maintenance and prevention
The earlier you start Botox, the better in terms of keeping your muscle movement induced wrinkles from becoming permanent fixtures on your face. Botox (and Dysport and Xeomin) last about 3 – 6 months in most patients.
The frequency has less to do with your age than with the strength of those muscles to be treated and how much of a habit it is to make those expressions.
Improving your overall skin quality and preventing more damage – particularly by not smoking and by protecting yourself from ultraviolet damage — will help everything you do look better and the results last longer. (Heidi A. Waldorf, MD, New York Dermatologist)
Botox works great every three months
Most of my patients regardless of their age get their Botox every 3 months. Botox usually wears off at that point. The dose is different depending on how severe your wrinkles are but not the time in between treatments.
It is a great preventative measure for future wrinkles. A 50 year old will probably need larger doses to relax and muscle and a comination of fillers to best treat the wrinkles and lack of volume. (Brenda Dintiman, MD, Fairfax Dermatologic Surgeon)
