Statement: Dr. Shaw’s inspiration was realized on a trip with his father to the Kjabe Mission Hospital in Kenya during his second year of medical school. During this trip, after witnessing many patients with facial deformities, he found his passion and a path toward making a real difference in the lives of others.

His specialization in facial plastic surgery began by contributing to a medical mission trip to Belize by the World Pediatric Project. While there, he served on a team of only four surgeons performing life-altering facial reconstruction surgeries on children with severe cleft lip and palate deformities, as well as congenital ear defects.

The Richmond native brought this experience back home to Virginia where he founded his own practice, Travis Shaw MD.

To this day, servitude and philanthropy remain as the cornerstone of his practice by volunteering his time, talent, and monetary resources to the Richmond community.

Is it possible to fix my nose tip only to look better from the sides?
Rhinoplasty our nasal tip
Dec 11, 2017
Certainly an isolated tip rhinoplasty is possible, but when I evaluate a nose I always think in terms of balance. Is the nose as a unit balanced, and is it balanced with the rest of the face. Best to find an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon in your area and have a thorough evaluation to understand all of you options. Best luckDr S

Swelling After rhinoplasty
Nov 15, 2017
Dear questionsThe early postoperative period after rhinoplasty can be a difficult time. You want to see the results of your surgery, but have to be patient to allow for swelling to subside. No fun, indeed. Day 7 is much to early to pass judgement on any of the maneuvers performed in the surgery. In the upcoming months, your nose will go through many changes and look better and better. Though its hard, try to remember that time is your friend. BestDr S
I am interested in a jaw reduction for a slimmer more oval looking face?
Botox for facial slimming
Oct 12, 2017
Dear JojoThanks for including photos with your question. You would indeed be an excellent candidate for injection of neurotoxin into the masseter muscle. The procedure itself is quick and easy, I use about 17-22 units of Botox on each side, re evaluate at 1 month and consider enhancement if there is still a great deal of movement or bulk in the muscle. You are fortunate that in New York there are many excellent injectors, just be certain to choose a board certified specialist. I hope you ...
4 weeks after having a bottom Blepharoplasty, I still have fluid -- is there a way to get rid of it?
Swelling after blepharoplasty
Oct 11, 2017
Dear ZonateSome patients can have swelling after lower eyelid surgery for up to 3 months post op. As your surgeon mentioned, it will settle out. I have had success with referring patients for lymphatic massage, which has resolved their swelling within a couple of massage sessions. Perhaps there is someone reputable with this technique in your area. All the bestDr S
Is it possible to get nostril size reduced?
Nostril size
Aug 23, 2017
Dear videogirlExcellent question. Reducing the width of the nostrils can be easily accomplished in the office under local anesthesia by incisions hidden in the crease where the nostril meets the base of the nose. Recovery for alar base modification is much less involved than a full rhinoplasty. The incisions are very difficult to see once they are healed.  Find a skilled rhinoplasty surgeon in your area to discuss your goals. Best luck!Dr S
Is it possible to get a neck lift without general anesthesia?
Face and Neck lift: general or local anesthesia
Aug 9, 2017
Dear ShannyExcellent question! This is a very common concern for patients who are seeking to rejuvenate their lower face and neck, but may be concerned about having to have general anesthesia, or a longer recovery period. In you photo you do not appear to have a severely aged neck. A full physical would be needed to confirm, but you would likely be a candidate for an in office neck lift done under local, or a minimally invasive neck procedure such as Thermi Tight or Facetite. Both of the...

Brows dropped and blepharoplasty
Jul 31, 2017
Dear fortyIm really sorry to hear about your problems after surgery. If you cannot close your eye the most important thing to focus on is keeping your eye healthy with aggressive moisturizing by using ointment at night and getting an exam sooner rather than later. To answer your question, upper blepharoplasty can indeed pull the brow downward. The brow can be overlooked as the real problem causing heavy eyelids. A brow lift may be beneficial for you, but you need a physical exam to d...
Have I compromised my septorhinoplasty results?
Recovery after Septorhinoplasty
Jul 6, 2017
Dear clarissamansoorIt is very unlikely that exposure to the sun will have any affects on the outcome of your surgery as a septorhinoplasty is an operation under the skin. As long as you are careful while washing your nose, you should not do any harm. Best luckDr S
How common are irregularities in the incision for upper eyelid surgery? Slow healing, bumps etc
Healing after eyelid surgery
Jul 3, 2017
Dear jfSmall bumps or suture line abnormalities are not uncommon after eyelid surgery and will resolve on their own. Discuss this with your surgeon and see if there is any intervention they recommend to help. BestDr S
Is it OK to have SculpSure procedure 3 months after Smart Lipo?
Sculpsure after liposuction
Jun 29, 2017
Dear lelstoneThats an excellent question. Certainly targeted fat destruction with Sculpsure after lipo is a great combination treatment. I think waiting a full 6 months to make certain all inflammation has resolved is likely the safest route to go. We have found that patients who have had previous procedures such as lipo, coolsculpting or surgical procedures in the treated areas do not get the same results as patients who have never had a procedure. After a procedure, the fat can sometimes b...
I had a septoplasty 2 years ago. I would like to get a septum piercing. Would this be okay?
Piercing after septoplasty
Jun 28, 2017
If is has been 2 years, you certainly are healed from your septoplasty. If a piercing is your thing, go for it. Best Dr S
Would presence of lipomas prevent fat transfer during blepharoplasty ?
Fat transfer Blepharoplasty
Jun 26, 2017
Dear SchoenjExcellent question. There are scattered reports in the medical literature of lipomas occurring in the eyelid, but not as a result of fat transfer. Kudos to your surgeon for being astute during your surgery. If my plan is to use abdominal fat prior to a fat transfer procedure, I will examine the abdomen. Having said that, deeper lipomas could be missed, especially if there is excess fat present. Should lipomas preclude one from undergoing a fat transfer? That would be left to th...
Can SculpSure cause irregularities and dips in the area treated?
Lumps after Sculpsure
Jun 6, 2017
Dear 50almost
Given that these irregularities showed up only a few days after treatment they are likely caused by inflammation where your body is clearing the fat cells which have been destroyed. There are no reports of permanent irregularities after Sculpsure as can be seen with liposuction.
This will likely resolve over the upcoming weeks without any issue. Hang in there

How can I improve my nose? Would a non surgical nose job fix it?
Non surgical nose job
Jun 5, 2017
Dear ToriiijThanks for a great question and photos. You certainly do not have a horrible nose. I agree with others here who have suggested that a non surgical nose job may not accomplish your goals. Some subtle tip refinements would bring your nose into harmony with the rest of your face. Find an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon in your area and talk about your goals. Best luck!Dr S
Is it safe to walk straight after rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty recovery
Jun 5, 2017
Dear CAYou should be fine for a short walk the next day. I actually encourage my patients to get up and move around after rhinoplasty as it helps prevent blood clots and encourages a decrease in swelling.Best luck!
