Botulinum toxin is a butolin type A toxin that is synthesized by anaerobic Clostridium bacteria, that is, microorganisms. In medicine, botulinum toxin was used in 1960. Then this toxin gave the opportunity to radically change the lives of many patients with a variety of diseases.
Doctors used – and still use – it with paresis (partial paralysis) and paralysis of the facial nerve, since the administration of botulinum toxin promoted muscle relaxation and facial symmetry restoration.
Botulinum toxin is used by nerve pathologists in the treatment of migraines, headaches, cerebral palsy, strabismus and other diseases of the nervous system.
Botulinotherapy can be prescribed and the orthodontist with bruxism – grind your teeth. Botulinum toxin acts locally: it disrupts the transmission of the nerve impulse from the nerve end to the muscle, thereby relaxing the particular muscle.
But this process is temporary, so Botox injections should be repeated every 3-5 months.
How did botulinum toxin appear in cosmetology?
Using botulinum toxin for paralysis, doctors noticed that it perfectly smoothes wrinkles. Since then, and began its active implementation in cosmetology.
Usually, using botulotoxin, wrinkles on the forehead, nose bridge and near the eyes are smoothed. You can make the correction in the lower third of the face, but the muscles in this area are too close – it is likely to weaken the wrong muscle. But this consequence does not carry any danger to health: the corners of the mouth may temporarily drop. Therefore, injections of botulinum toxin require an excellent knowledge of anatomy.
It should be borne in mind: botulinum toxin is not able to completely smooth out static wrinkles – deep wrinkles that have long been formed. Therefore, do not hope that in 60 years old, such injections will be able to fix everything. This is not true. But despite this, botulinum therapy is very effective in combating dynamic wrinkles, and it is an excellent prevention of the formation of new wrinkles. The result of such therapy is manifested on the second day, and finally will be visible after two weeks.
It will persist for 3-5 months, so if the patient wants to have a smooth and wrinkle-free skin, this procedure will have to be returned regularly.
Treatment of increased sweating with botulinum toxin
In the treatment of hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin can be injected into the axillary, palms, feet and inguinal region. Injection is administered superficially and in large quantities. Stopping sweat secretion is due to a violation of the transmission of the nerve impulse to the sweat gland: the sweat ceases to be produced in a specific place for 4-6 months.
The number of “dry” months depends on how actively a person does sports and how well the microcirculation is developed.
The degree of sweating is determined with the help of an iodine test: the cosmetologist dryly wipes a certain area, for example underarms, applies iodine, then sprinkles talcum powder. In those places that have strongly blackened, there is the highest concentration of sweat glands. And this means that there is more sweat and more Botox units should be introduced there. While injecting botulinum toxin into one area, for example, underarms, the cosmetologist should warn the patient that sweat can start to separate from another area, for example back. But this will happen only in conditions that are extreme for the organism: high temperature on the street, active sports. In other cases, this is unlikely to be noticeable.
But in this case, botulinum toxin can not be stabbed in all places at the same time: sweating is necessary so that the body does not overheat.
Side effects and contraindications
Systemic side effects with the administration of botulinum toxin to date have not been identified. But there is a list of contraindications. Among them:
- Resistance (insensitivity) to Botox;
- pregnancy;
- feeding;
- oncological diseases;
- violation of the integrity of the skin at the injection site;
- chronic diseases in the phase of exacerbation.
